Nunthirat Koi Suwannagate was born and raised in Bangkok, Thailand. Suwannagate is currently based in New York City, where she designs and produces her collections.

Her debut line, Koi Suwannagate, launched in 2001 and made its debut at New York Fashion Week in 2007, the same year that Vogue and the Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA) named her a finalist for its prestigious CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund. Women’s Wear Daily went on to name Suwannagate’s Spring 2009 outing one of the Top 10 collections of the season, alongside Lanvin, Dries Van Noten and Chanel. She’s garnered both editorial and retail acclaim with features in Vogue (U.S., British and Japan), Harper’s Bazaar, Elle, InStyle, Marie Claire, Madame Figaro, Los Angeles Times and The New York Times, and accounts with leading stores worldwide, such as Barneys New York, Joyce, Ron Herman and L’Eclaireur, to name a few. Celebrity clients have included Iman, Gwyneth Paltrow, Natalie Portman, Nicole Kidman and Reese Witherspoon.

Koi has also done special projects and collections for 3.1 Phillip Lim, Nordstrom, Anthropologie and the California Biennial at the Pasadena Museum of California Art.

Koi Suwannagate is Koi’s ready-to-wear collection, launched back in 2001. Crafted from silk and new and vintage cashmere and inspired by nature's organic shapes, it inhabits the more romantic end of the design scale, emphasizing feminine cuts and dimensional, hand-sculpted details. This is where Koi’s trademark artistry meets elegant real-world clothes. “It’s all in the detail,” she says. “I love femininity paired with imperfection, and I like the old times when one took sufficient time to make a perfect garment.”

Timeless essentials rooted in a sense of ease — that’s the concept behind Whim. Crafted from luxurious vintage and heirloom materials, the line centers on relaxed styles (sporty pullovers; tomboy cardigans) that also make for great year-round travel pieces. It’s about a seasonless, versatile mindset.

Only one silhouette is created per year, resulting in a limited-edition capsule collection. Each individual garment within that set comes with a special label, hand-embroidered with the edition number, and is carefully packaged in an exclusive gift box. Suwannagate also takes custom requests for Whim — incorporating, for instance, a client’s treasured silk scarf, handed down in the family for generations, into the design.
